Antony, a drunkard and a bully and a landlord, lusts after the priest's wife Bhagirathi and one day while drunk rapes her. After this the priest refuses to live with her. As she wanders about aimlessly not going what to do, a policeman tells her she not meekly accept her fate while Antony goes about as if nothing happened. Bhagirathi goes to Antony's house and says she will stay there now. Antony takes care of her overs the years and she begins to actually respect him in private. When Antony dies and the priest comes back to her imploring her to come back to him, Bhagirathi realizes what Antony has meant to her. Shedeclares she'd rather be known asAntony's widow than as the wife of the priest.
