Oh My Friend

Telugu, Drama, 2011, Color

Cast And Crew

Chandu (Siddharth Narayan) and Siri (Shruti Haasan) are best friends and enjoy a platonic relationship, at least, that is what they think. The two buddies go ahead and find their respective partners (Hansika Motwani and Navdeep). However, the very nature of their relationship gets threatened in the presence of their new found partners. Will they be able to prove that a boy and a girl can be just good friends?

It's urban, it's chic and it's pretty. - all the ingredients of a hep, love story. If that is what you want, Oh My Friend has got it. If you are looking for a groundbreaking idea, an innovative screenplay, an out-of-the-box movie, my dear friend, look elsewhere.

The movie treads on the single premise of 'Can a girl and boy be just friends?'. It appeals at times and flounders at others. The sequences where Chandu gets excited and struggles for a career in music are well handled. The predictable bits about people around presuming Chandu and Siri to be an item is yawn-inspiring, while the scenes where their respective fiancees doubt them have a been-there-seen-that 200 times feel. The movie is, no doubt, high on candly-floss romance especially between Siddharth and Hansika and is pretty mature even in its treatment. However, it is also a bit low on what Telugu movie buffs love - dinchak, over the top dialogues; and also low on the comedy track. The narrative flow is smooth and linear without too many twists and turns, ups and downs and consequently, is quite flat at times.

Looking at the four central characters, Siddharth is cute and desirable as usual and Shruthi, for once, you feel has acted - especially in the scenes where she argues about the priorities of life. Hansika can certainly look at slimming down. She looks pretty 'mature' for a collegian. Navdeep is OK.

On the technical side, Rahul Raj's music is fresh. The Sri Chaitanya song with a college backdrop is good - both when you hear it and when you see its picturization. Vijay Chakravarthy's camera work captures the modern day romance and relationships slickly while the 'cool' quotient gets heightened with the hot wheels and the slick outfits all around.

Overall, Oh My Friend feels like going to a known destination in a road you know pretty well. Familiarity is its doing... and undoing too.
