Upperstall Review

Hindi, Comedy, 2014, Color

At risk of being too descriptive, here is the gist of the review that follows - Watching drops of water falling from a tap for 3 hours at home would be more entertaining than Humshakals.

If you have still made it to the second paragraph, you probably need more convincing. Humshakals pretends to be a mindless, slapstick comedy and falls miserably despite such high aspirations. I have not had the good fortune of watching Himmatwala but if that was bad, boy Sajid Khan has trumped himself. It might appear that Sajid has taken upon himself the enormous burden of manufacturing loads of crap masquerading as cinema because apparently we don't have enough of that. Sajid, if you are reading this, we understand and share your burden but you don't HAVE to do this. You can go back to hosting Bollywood countdown shows on TV or making fun of Ashutosh Gowariker. There are hobbies you can take up or rehab sessions which might be of help to understand that the world needs less of Sajid Khan movies. Surely you may be very useful to the world in some other way but give the world a chance to discover that.

A word about performances

- Saif Ali Khan: Beautifully nuanced portrayal of a dog, mental patient, drag queen and homosexual.
- Riteish Deshmukh: Exceptionally nuanced portrayal of a dog, mental patient, drag queen and homosexual.
- Ram Kapoor: Wonderful portrayal of an overweight mental patient, overweight drag queen, overweight man and another overweight man.
- Esha Gupta, Tamannaah and Bipasha Basu: Absolute gems of performances as a bimbo doctor, a bimbo TV anchor and a bimbo housekeeper.

Oh, there is a bunch of helpless looking Englishmen, a Prince Charles look-alike and also Satish Shah in the movie because apparently Boman Irani was not fitting in the budget.

Despite everything, if you have 3 hours and are thinking of watching Humshakals, we are reminding you once more that you have a water-dripping tap at home and it doesn't cost anything.

Upperstall Rating - Who are we kidding?
